Central Ohio Jobless Rate Down Slightly

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The jobless rate in central Ohio decreased slightly in February, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In Franklin County, unemployment dipped from 9.5 percent in January to 9.4 percent in February.  The same was true of the unemployment rate in the city of Columbus.

The statewide unemployment rate rose slightly in February to 10.9 percent, up from 10.8 percent in January, ODJFS reported.

“Ohio’s unemployment rate rose slightly as more Ohioans entered the job market but were unable to find work,” said ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin. “The number of service-providing jobs increased while job losses occurred in the goods-producing industries.”

Other central Ohio counties also saw a slight decrease in the jobless rate. Delaware County had the lowest unemployment rate at 8.2 percent, down from 8.4 percent in January. Unemployment also fell in Fairfield, Knox, Madison, Marion and Union counties. The unemployment rate remained unchanged in Licking and Pickaway counties.

The U.S. unemployment rate for February was 9.7 percent.
