Open communication is so important for many reasons but especially for avoiding workplace conflict. Allowing and encouraging open communication builds a culture of trust and a positive work environment. Here are three ways that you can courage open communication within your workplace.

Invite team members to collaborative meetings to discuss issues that are preventing success.

  • Hold regularly scheduled meetings where a portion of the meeting is dedicated to questions about issues on accomplishing the team’s tasks or goals. Let the team members feel free to discuss and share in these meetings. This will help team members to feel that they are being acknowledged and heard by not only their management but by their colleagues.

Lead by example. Listen to your coworkers and be reasonably accommodating.

  • One of the best ways to avoid conflict in the work environment is by setting a good example for your team members. It is especially important for those within leadership roles to reasonably accommodate and listen to others’ opinions. When this is done, team members feel that their opinions are valued, and that they are an important member of the workplace. This also creates an environment of open collaboration where others feel more comfortable, listening to another point of view and being willing to accommodate and solve problems together.

Encourage coworkers that their voice is important, as well as every team member’s voice.

  • Every person on the team should be aware that they are part of a group that works together to accomplish a greater goal. Their individual contributions are important, but so is the way they can rely on each other. We all have different ways, experiences and outlooks that can determine how we address something. It is most important for team members to remember that everyone on the team is working towards the same goal, and it is important to hear each other out and value that person and their contributions as well as their perspectives on workplace situations.
